Economic RESPITE Trial

The RESPITE trial was a randomised controlled trial of remifentanil intravenously administered patient-controlled analgesia (PCA) versus pethidine intramuscular injection for pain relief in labour (Wilson et al. Trials 2016;17(1):591).  The trial results have been accepted for publication in The Lancet, but in short, showed greater satisfaction with pain relief (p=0.0003) and reductions in epidurals and instrumental delivery rates (p=0.02).

This project is to undertake further analysis of an economic evaluation which showed that remifentanil reduced total NHS costs, despite the increased costs of analgesia.  The analysis will address some of the limitations associated with the initial economic evaluation.
