Estimating the health impact of a sugar sweetened drinks tax in local leisure facilities in Sheffield

We have strengthened links with the National Centre for Sports and Exercise Medicine (NCSEM), through the appointment of the NIHR CLAHRC PHI theme Lead, Liddy Goyder, as Director of Research.

A recent example of this closer collaboration is a project that was funded in February 2017 by the Medical Research Council Proximity to Discovery fund (£20,000) to evaluate the impact of a 20p increase in the price of high sugar soft drinks in Sheffield City Trust facilities.

The initial results suggested that the ‘sugar tax’ decreased the amount of full sugar drinks bought whilst not affecting the volume of overall sales.
