Valuing active life in dementia (VALID): a NIHR funded programme grant

Professor Gail Mountain based in our Primary care-based management of frailty in older people theme and working with the Telehealth and Telecare Theme sits on the programme management team of the VALID project.

Gail is working alongside researchers from the Universities of Sheffield and Hull and other partners in our region to deliver this ground breaking research into dementia.

Professor Mountain says “The project is a randomised controlled trial of an occupational therapy intervention for people with a dementia diagnosis and their main supporter (carer).  The intervention is based in the work of a Dutch occupational therapy researcher (Maud Graff) who demonstrated that 10 successive sessions of home or community based occupational therapy with people with mild to moderate dementia and their main supporter was clinically and cost effective.   This programme has involved tailoring the intervention to a UK population and its effectiveness is now being tested in a number of sites across England including Sheffield.  Recruitment is challenging so the timeframe for intervention delivery has been extended to June 2017.”
